GG Halter HoudinisUpdated a month ago

Typically, the issue of horses that pull the halter over their head can be solved with an adjustment or an additional strap. Check out our halter fit video and make sure that you have the throat latch/crown piece parts adjusted well behind their jaw/cheekbone and two-finger snug. Adjusting the slider buckle under their jaw back a few inches will help. This will make the halter fit snugly around the smaller part of the neck so that the throat latch/crown piece acts like a neck strap. After making the adjustments, you can send us photos of the halter muzzle combination, taken directly from the side and with their head up. Once we can see how everything is fitting, we can offer more tailored advice.

If your horse is a “Super Houdini” and continues to escape their halter after we’ve gotten the halter fit just right, adding a second throat latch or a neck strap may be helpful. Check out these videos for the addition of the stay put throat latch or the neck strap. (If you are already using a neck strap, watch the video beyond the six minute mark for our most Houdini proof and the safest way to use this option.) Before adding more attachments, we recommend checking back in with photos of the new adjustment just so we can make sure the halter is set up as well as possible.

In the photo below, you can see the ideal fit. The crown piece fits a couple of inches behind the ears, and the throat latch is pretty snug in the groove between the neck and jaw bone. It's pretty snug but still loose enough for them to do everything they need to do while being way too small to be pulled over the head. We understand that every horse's proportions are a little different, so your setup may not look exactly like this. However, getting it as close to this as possible would be ideal!
