Which size muzzle should I buy?Updated a year ago

GreenGuard muzzle sizing is based on the size of your horse's actual muzzle; defined as the area of the mouth, nostrils, chin, lips, and front of their nose. To measure this, it is helpful to have both the muzzle circumference and the bit size (or width of their mouth). Below is our size chart and our written step-by-step instructions on how to gather both measurements, as well as visuals and video links if it's easier to follow along that way.

Measure the Muzzle Circumference:

  • Using a cloth, measuring tape, strap, twine, or other flexible but non-stretchy material measure around the widest part of your horse's muzzle. Start at the most prominent tip of their chin and go over their nose, just touching the top of their nostrils, and back around to the tip of their chin where you started.
  • Pull the measuring tape or twine snugly enough so there are no large gaps, but not so snug that it indents the skin.
  • If not using a measuring tape, mark the start and end of the twine/strap with your fingers and have a helper measure the distance between these points. This will be your horse's nose circumference measurement.

Measure the Muzzle Width/Bit Size:

Even if you already know what size bit your horse uses, we recommend remeasuring your horse as some bits and fitters may have different guidelines for measuring. Our guideline is to measure from one corner of your horse's mouth to the other (going over the tongue and through their mouth) and add half an inch. There are tools specifically for this, however, you can also use a dowel, a fabric measuring tape, or even bailing twine.

  • First, slide it into your horse's mouth where a bit would normally go
  • Mark either end where it comes out of the corner of their mouth, making sure there's no slack between the two points
  • Measure the distance between the two points you've marked
  • Add half an inch
  • Using this information, compare it to the size chart above
