Sometimes, horses may need a little extra help to figure out how to use their muzzle!
First, please ensure that everything is adjusted properly so your horse is comfortable using their muzzle. The angle of the muzzle is especially important for ensuring your horse can get grass successfully. Check out this video to rule out any angle adjustment issues affecting your horse: Adjusting the Angle of the GreenGuard Grazing Muzzle. If you would like help double-checking your fit and adjustment, please send photos of the halter muzzle combination on the horse, taken directly from the side with their head up, and our customer service team will be more than happy to help you out.
If everything looks correct, find something they are motivated to eat – like a tiny bit of tasty feed or treats - and hand feed it through the muzzle to give them an idea of how it works.
The first time you do this, press the food through the holes and slowly introduce it with a flat hand so they have to forage around your hand for the food. Next, sprinkle it in a flat feed pan or flat area, which usually teaches them to press the muzzle to the ground to get food. You can then repeat this by sprinkling food in the grass. This shows them that they can get grass through the muzzle. Many pick it up once they get the idea and realize they can get grass through.
