How tall does grass need to be to start using the muzzle safely?Updated a year ago

Horses should be able to graze on anything that is at least 3 inches high, though an ideal height is between 4-10 inches.

As you can imagine, if the grass is too short or sparse, your horse may have a hard time eating through our muzzle and may become frustrated. This can indicate that it is too early to start using the muzzle or that your horse may need to practice on something a little taller or less sparse. Check out our video on teaching a frustrated horse to use the grazing muzzle.

As a rule of thumb, grass should be at least 3-5” tall before you start using the muzzle. In ideal conditions, 4-10” tall grass on flat ground should be more than enough for a muzzled horse to graze. That being said, many horses do just fine on taller unmowed grass once they have the hang of using the muzzle. Monitor your horse closely and consult your veterinarian if you have any questions or concerns.
