How does the GreenGuard Muzzle compare to a center hole muzzle?Updated 8 months ago

Grass intake:
In a single hole grazing muzzle, horses are typically pecking at the single central hole repetitively. The multi-hole and open design of the GG muzzle encourages horses to graze naturally while blocking 30-70% of the grass they would normally get with each bite. Because the center where they're typically getting the most grass is blocked off, the restriction of the GG muzzle versus the single hole muzzles is fairly comparable.

That being said, some horses get very adept at grazing through the GG muzzle and might need additional restriction. We recommend monitoring your horse's weight with a weight tape to know if the muzzle is working well for them or not. If they do need additional restriction, we have some great options, including our leather and diet inserts, as well as additional ways to further customize your horse's grass intake. For the most part, our muzzle as is helps them maintain or lose weight on grass, though it definitely depends on the time of year, the type/quality of grass and how persistent and aggressive of a grazer your horse is. If you need more restriction beyond what the inserts provide, you can check out this video: Customize Muzzle Hole size

Comfort:
The open design and breathability of the GG muzzle is often a lot more comfortable for horses. Its open design promotes it fitting away from the face, so as long as the sizing is correct, it shouldn't be touching them nearly as much while they are actually grazing. This cuts down on rubs and promotes breathability. It is also lighter and more durable than a lot of the other muzzles on the market. One of our favorite features is the food grade material that does not hold moisture. This further cuts down on the weight and also doesn't hold on to bacteria during the hot and humid summer months.

For the most part, if our muzzles are fitted and adjusted correctly, we don't see as many rubbing issues. That being said, some horses are a little more sensitive, particularly those with any white or pink skin in their nose area. We do have lots of great tips and tricks for preventing rubs if they do start to occur.

Unlike many other companies that sell grazing muzzles as one of many products, muzzles are what we do. We have an expansive customer support knowledge base, both on our website and via email support. Our customer support team will help you step-by-step to get everything just right whether it's preventing rubs, thwarting escape artists, or general fit and adjustment questions. We are always here to help
