Video: Muzzle Inserts Overview
Not every horse will need an insert in their muzzle. The exception to this would be horses who wear through the bottom of their muzzle quickly, those who need additional grass restriction, or those with known sensitive teeth or gums. We recommend seeing how your horse acclimates to the muzzle on its own before adding an insert.
If you know your horse has sensitive teeth, lips, or gums, set yourself up for success by purchasing either a Leather Insert or a Standard Insert with your initial muzzle purchase. Our go-to recommendation for tooth wear problems is our Leather Insert – the genuine leather combines with your horse’s saliva to create a smooth, slippery surface that forms a nice layer of added protection for their teeth. This insert does restrict intake about 30% more than the Standard Insert or the muzzle on its own, so that is something to keep in mind. With any of our inserts, you will want to keep an eye on your horse to monitor their intake and ensure they are still getting enough food.
