Can my horse still eat hay?Updated 8 days ago
While our muzzles were not designed for use with hay, many horses do just fine eating hay through them. You can push hay through the holes to give your horse the idea if they are initially struggling to eat hay through their muzzle.
Combining the muzzle with a slow-feed hay net or bag may make it particularly challenging for your horse to eat. We recommend checking with a vet or nutritionist before trying this, as this might not be enough calories to sustain a healthy lifestyle. We do have many folks that use muzzles and hay bags in this way, but keep in mind that even if they need to lose weight, it’s important to do it safely.
If you do decide to use a hay net or bag, we recommend purchasing our Houdini Helper Hook & Loop and Tape Set corner straps and use them instead of or in addition to the buckle straps that come with the muzzle. Extra corner straps and taping over the buckles on the muzzle can help avoid the possibility of the buckles getting caught in the netting.
