Can I use a regular halter?Updated a year ago

Our muzzles are designed to fit on any halter. We recommend that the halter have some breakaway features, such as a leather breakaway crown piece. If you’re using a non-GG halter that doesn’t have that feature, you can purchase the Leather Breakaway for Non-GG Halters that can convert most halters to breakaway. This video has helpful tips for using our muzzle on a standard (non-GG) halter: Attaching a GreenGuard Muzzle to a Standard Halter.

If your horse is the type that tries to remove things and you predict your horse will be an “escape artist,” we recommend our Premium Breakaway Halter and our Houdini Helper Corner Straps. However, many horses do just fine in the muzzle as it comes. We are always happy to look at your setup and help troubleshoot if needed to help your horse succeed in any halter.

Benefits of the GG Premium Halter

Our halter adjusts slightly differently, making it more challenging for them to remove. We have learned that the best way to keep halters on Horses is to have a halter that fits further behind their jaw and cheekbone where a cribbing collar would go. It is critical to get it adjusted snugly enough so it can't be removed over their jaw area without also being uncomfortable or dangerous. Our newer halters are updated with an adjustable throat latch and a longer cheekpiece to allow this fit; however, we have many options to help solve escape artist issues with a regular halter, like adding a neck strap or a second throat latch. We have video links with both of these strategies below.
